My Town Monday is all about great local artists that I know personally/ have interacted with in a meaningful way.
Way back in November of 2012, my residence hall was putting on our preliminaries for the university-wide talent show UVL. To give you an idea of the scale of these things at NYU, Lady Gaga won my building's prelim and came in second overall while she was a freshman. As a member of building council, I had the privilege of not only helping to organize the show and constructing the venue in our mini theater, but hosting as well. It was a great day for my ego and a great day for music.
The second place winner of the show was Sofie Zamchick, a singer/songwriter who played an original marimba piece and dazzled the audience with her adorable headband. I still remember tabling for the show months earlier, trying to get acts when she decided to sign up on a whim. It was a good choice on her part, because her performance was one of the best of the night in the minds of judges and audience members.
Sofie's music is as sweet as she is, and her marimba playing is beautifully layered, and a fresh sound where acoustic guitars have become cliches.
Sofie recently performed at the Living Room in New York, and if you're interested in seeing her perform or hearing more of her music, check out her facebook page.
