My Town Monday is all about great local artists that I know personally/ have interacted with in a meaningful way.
Way back in November of 2012, my residence hall was putting on our preliminaries for the university-wide talent show UVL. To give you an idea of the scale of these things at NYU, Lady Gaga won my building's prelim and came in second overall while she was a freshman. As a member of building council, I had the privilege of not only helping to organize the show and constructing the venue in our mini theater, but hosting as well. It was a great day for my ego and a great day for music.
The winner of our preliminary was the R&B/jazz/rock quintet With Snack, and after three months, they went on to win fan favorite at the school-wide show. Their performance can be watched here.
Since then they've done several local shows as well as other NYU based shows. They also happen to be at every single party I have ever gone to, which is saying something because I've only been to approximately three parties since meeting these guys. I don't know what that says, but it's something.
The band consists of Aviv Goldgeiger on keyboard, Evan Lane on trumpet, Matt Dunietz on drums, Jono Stewart on bass, and Chris Roderick as lead vocals. Even from their first show, these guys had an incredible presence as performers, and Chris plays the perfect leading man- not too frenetic, not too cool.
One of my favorite moments from the night of our UVL prelims was stepping off stage for one of the performances and having the members of the then-nameless band motion me over and ask me to add a name for their group on the sheet. I handed them my phone, they typed out "With Snack" and now the name is known across campus. But I was the first to know the name, so I'm special, whatever.
Second favorite moment was the bassist Jono asking me to help him as he desperately searched for the strap for his bass. I found it right after their set. It was on the snack table.
The group cites reese's pieces and pretzels as their influences, and the tasty sound of their music backs up the claims. Currently the guys are working on an EP titled "Snacktime" due out later this summer.
If you want to catch a show or hear more from the band, check out their facebook page or head over to the Third North practice rooms, where the sweet sound of snack time can always be heard.
